Since its inception in 2014, the Grenada Contemporary exhibition, curated through Susan Mains gallery and hosted at Art House 473 has been a point of convergence for local and international artists exploring contemporary art in the region. As of the 8th edition of the Grenada Contemporary, 105 artists have been exhibited – being required to produce and present artwork that is at an international standard. Themes have focused on island identity and topics particular to a Caribbean reality, drawing on the writing of Caribbean authors such as Alister Hughes, Derek Walcott, Aime Cesaire, and Edouard Glissant.
For the 9th iteration of the Grenada Contemporary, curators Susan and Asher Mains are proposing Islands in Dialogue. Freshly returned from Venice at La Biennale di Venezia where the Grenada National Pavilion also hosted artists from neighbouring islands, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago, Islands in Dialogue is proposing to continue the conversation started there and to enrich our art community in Grenada with critical contributions from nearby. This exchange is a part of a Caribbean being co-created as we continue to collaborate and share our artistic visions.
One of the artists in our shared pavilion in Venice is Edward Bowen who will be presenting 4 public evenings of painting demonstrations, workshops, and conversation. Expanding his contemplations on identity, memory, and landscape, Bowen certainly has excelled in his field and is a compelling voice in the region.
Joining us, also from Trinidad and Tobago is Dr. Yao Ramesar, experienced, award-winning filmmaker and lecturer at the University of the West Indies. One of the region’s most influential cinematic voices, Ramesar deals with history, spirituality, and identity in his work screened internationally. We will be screening one of Ramesar’s recent project along with discussion following.
For the 9th Grenada Contemporary, we are hoping to strengthen regional dialogue in culture and the arts, in a setting that has been facilitating this kind of exchange since 2014, and drawing attention back to our participation in Venice. We are anticipating public engagement with these regional leaders and to encourage the strengthening of networks and friendships between artists, curators, and educators.
